The theory 'Doctrine of Lapse' is started by Lord Dalhousie who became governor general in 1848 .

According to the 'Doctrine of Lapse' all subordinate states (subsidiary states and states created by the British) where automatically' lapse', or pass into the hands of the British East India company.

He annexed Sambalpur (1852) , Nagpur (1856), Udaipur (1852) , Satara (1848) , and Jhansi (1854) through his policy of 'Doctrine of Lapse' .
