This picture shows the stages of weathering of rocks. When in rainy season the rain water seeps into the rock surface it stays there for some amount of time. But when winter comes the water that seeped into the rock freezes up due to low temperature in the surroundings. So when this water freezes it makes the crack bigger and results in small pieces of rocks which further leads to weathering of rocks.
