Inspiration is the process of taking air from the atmosphere into the lungs. It is done by creating a pressure gradient between the lungs and the atmosphere. During inspiration, the diaphragm contracts and the space in the thoracic cavity increases. Along with this, there is contraction of the external intercostal muscles. This results in the outward movement of the ribs and the sternum. This increases the volume of the thoracic chamber in the dorsoventral axis. This ultimately results in increase in the pulmonary volume. Due to this, intrapulmonary pressure becomes lesser than the atmospheric pressure. This causes the inhalation of air from the atmosphere into the lungs.
