Step-by-step explanation:

Given Five years ago, Ramu was thrice as old as Somu and ten years later, Ramu will be twice as old as Somu. Then the present ages of Ramu and Somu  respectively are

  • Let the age of Ramu be R – 5 years
  • Let the age of Somu be S – 5 years
  • According to the question Ramu was thrice as old as Somu
  • So R – 5 = 3 (S – 5)
  • So R – 5 = 3S – 15
  • Or R – 3S = - 10 -----------1
  • After 10 years
  • Age of Ramu will be R + 10
  • Age of Somu will be S + 10
  • So Ramu will be twice as old as Somu.
  •  So R + 10 = 2(S + 10)
  •  So R + 10 = 2S + 20
  •      R – 2S = 10 --------------2
  • Now from equation 1 and 2 we have
  •      R – 3S = - 10
  •      R – 2S = 10
  •           Subtracting we get
  •       So – S = - 20
  •      Or S = 20
  • Now R – 2S = 10
  •   R – 2(20) = 10
  •  R – 40 = 10
  • R = 10 + 40
  •  R = 50
  • Therefore age of Ramu is 50 years and age of Somu is 20 years.

 \underline{\pink{ At \: present : }}

 Age \: of \: Ramu = x \: years

 Age \: of \: Somu = y \: years

 \underline{\blue{ 5 \: years \: ago: }}

 Age \: of \: Ramu = (x -5)\: years

 Age \: of \: Somu = (y-5) \: years

/* According to the problem given */

 x - 5 = 3(y-5)

 \implies x - 5 = 3y - 15

 \implies x = 3y - 15 + 5

 Age \: of \: Ramu = (x +10)\: years

 Age \: of \: Somu = (y+10) \: years

/* According to the problem given */

 x + 10 = 2(y+10)

 \implies x + 10 = 2y + 20

 \implies 3y - 2y = 20
