let metal carbonate be : MCO3 and metal oxide is MO
MCO3 ----> MO + CO2
1gm 0.56g
so the oxide is CaO (M.wt = 56) and metal carbonate is CaCO3 (M. wt = 100)
metal is Ca (M.wt = 40) and metal ion isCa++
its eq. wt ( 40 /2 ) = 20

Please refer to the answer of Mr. Ramesh. If the metal X is considered and the weight of the metal is M gm then the equivalent weight of the metal X would be M/2 as the definition of equivalent weight suggests that the weight of the metal that combines with 8 parts of Oxygen is the equivalent weight of that substance.
Please note that the atomic weight of Oxygen is 16 gm.
