6. In intensely cold climate our hair get erect and we start shivering. Why? Give reasons. Name the process that brings about such responses.
Answers
During cold climates, our hair stands erect resulting in goosebumps.
Goosebumps are produced when tiny muscles at the base of our hair follicle contract resulting in our hair standing erect. This is a physiological phenomenon which was inherited from our ancestors.
This phenomenon is helpful in animals having a thick hair coat but not much of a help for humans since we lack hair coats. In animals goosebumps cause the hair to stand straight thus expanding the layer of hair and providing more effective insulation. This is termed Piloerection.
Shivering is a mechanism exhibited by our body to warm it up when placed in cold situations. During this situation, our body muscles contract rapidly resulting in the production of heat which warms up our body. This process is called Homeostasis.
