6. Meenakshi took some observations of the motion of a car with respect to time. She plotted a speed-time graph of the observations on a paper.

She showed the graph to her friend, Soniya and asked her to answer the following questions based on the graph.
(i) What type of motion is represented by OA, AB and BC?
(ii) What is the acceleration of the car?
(iii) What is the retardation of the car?
(iv) Calculate the distance travelled by the car.

Explanation:

SOLUTION

(i) OA represents a straight line with a positive slope, so, the type of motion represented by OA is uniformly accelerated motion.

AB is parallel to the time axis and hence, its slope is zero, so, its acceleration is also zero. Hence, the car is moving with a uniform velocity.

BC represents a straight line with a negative slope, so, the motion is uniformly retarded motion.

(ii) In the graph, line OA shows acceleration, therefore, from O to A:

Change in speed = (40 - 0)m/s = 40m/s

Time taken = (20-0)s = 20s

(iii) In the graph, line BC shows retardation, therefore, from B to C:

Change in speed = (0 - 40)m/s = -40m/s

Time taken = (80-60)s = 20s
