a) The number of students who only opted for mathematics is 20.

b) The number of students who only opted for physics is 10.

Given,

There is a total of 50 students in the class.

30 students opted for Physics, and 40 students opted for Mathematics.

To Find,

The number of students who only opted for mathematics.

The number of students who only opted for physics.

Solution,

Firstly we must find the number of students who have taken mathematics and physics.

So, we will use the given information to find the number of students,

n(PuM) = 50.

n(P) = 30.

n(M) = 40.

n(PnM) =?

We will use the formula,

n(PnM) = n(P) + n(M) - n(PuM)

n(PnM) = 30 + 40 - 50

n(PnM)  = 70 - 50

n(PnM) = 20.

(a) we will subtract number of students who opted maths from number of students who opted for maths and physics.

= n(M) - n(PnM)

= 40 - 20

= 20.

(b) we will subtract number of students who opted physics from number of students who opted for maths and physics.

= n(P) - n(PnM)

= 30 - 20

= 10.

a) The number of students who only opted for mathematics is 20.

b) The number of students who only opted for physics is 10.
