Chloroplasts and mitochondria are called semiautonomous organelles due to the following reasons :

1. They have their own DNA, RNA and other materials required to synthesize their own proteins.

2. They manufacture their own enzymes.

3. They can multiply and give rise to new organelles of same kind.

4. They have their own transport systems.

5. Their origin is not from the components of cell. They are believed to be evolved from bacterial forms that were consumed by the earlier cells (zooplanktons)

and which were evolved as the evolution of organism took place (endosymbiosis).

6. They have their own ribosomes (70S type).
