The end Y is the one which is hotter.

Explanation:

  1. As the rod heated and the nails on side Y got detached from the rod this means that the end Y of rod ia nearer to flame.
  2. As end Y is nearer it got heated first and more due to which the wax melted and caused drop of the nail.
  3. Thus, the end Y is more hotter than end X which had the nails even after the flame was removed.
