GIVEN :

Sum of two numbers is 95.

• One number exceeds the other by 15.

TO FIND :

Numbers = ?

SOLUTION :

• Let the numbers are 'x' and 'y' .

▪︎ According to the first condition –

=> x + y = 95 —————eq.(1)

▪︎ According to second condition –

=> x = y + 15 —————eq.(2)

• Put the value of 'x' in eq.(2) –

=> (y + 15) + y = 95

=> 2y + 15 = 95

=> 2y = 95 - 15

=> 2y = 80

=> y = 40

So that –

=> x = 40 + 15

=> x = 55

• Numbers = 40 , 55

▪︎ Hence , Second option is correct.

Step-by-step explanation:

{\red{\underline{\underline{\bold{Given:-}}}}}

  • The sum of two numbers = 95

  • One number exceeds the other by 15

{\blue{\underline{\underline{\bold{To\:Find:-}}}}}

  • The two numbers.

{\green{\underline{\underline{\bold{Solution:-}}}}}

Let the numbers be ' x ' and ' y '

The sum of numbers = 95

x + y = 95 ............(i)

One exceeds the other by 15

x = y + 15 ............(ii)

Substitute equation (ii) in (i) i.e Substitute the value of x in equation(i)

x + y = 95 \\  \\  \implies (y + 15) + y = 95 \\  \\  \implies y + 15 + y = 95 \\  \\  \implies2y + 15 = 95 \\  \\  \implies2y = 95 - 15 \\  \\  \implies2y = 80 \\  \\ \implies y =  \frac{80}{2}  = 40

Substituting y = 40 in equation(i)

x + y = 95

x + 40 = 95

x = 95 - 40

x = 55

Therefore,

x = 55 and y = 40

The numbers are 40 and 55

\boxed{Option \: 2 \: is\: correct}
