Answer:

GUWAHATI: As the country battles acute water crisis in different regions, Assam too is reeling under intense pressure of groundwater depletion. Growing population, ground water extraction beyond the permissible limit have been identified to be the main cause of water crisis in the urban pockets of Assam.

According to the Ground Water Resource Estimation (GWRE) report in 2013, Assam enjoys the 'safe category' status when it comes to district-wise extraction of ground water. Sources in the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) said that localised variations, lack of scope of recharging the lost groundwater and the geological set-up of the areas facing the crisis continue to add the the already-existing problem of water scarcity in the region.

"Concrete structures prevent any absorption of ground water, and water harvesting is still not a common practice in Guwahati. As a result, several localities are facing problems that come with groundwater depletion. If the utilized ground water is not replenished in the years to come, this crisis will definitely intensify," a senior official of the CGWB told TOI.
