Eight times the sum of a number and six is the same as 10 more than twice the number. Whats the number?
Answer by bmauger(101) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Go through each word and translate into math, "Eight (8) times (*) the sum of a number and six (x+6) is the same as (=) 10 more than (10+) twice the number (2x)."
So write:
8%2A%28x%2B6%29=10%2B2xThat's the hard part, now distribute:
8x%2B48=10%2B2xsubtract 2x & subtract 48 from both sides:
6x=-38Divide:
x=-38%2F6=-19%2F3
-19/3 then is your answer. Not very usual that a story problem comes back with a fractional answer, but that's the only number that will work for your problem.
