Answer:

When two resistance are connected in a series, the equivalent resistance is 90 ohms. When these resistances are connected in parallel, the equivalent resistance becomes 20 ohms. What is the individual value of both resistances?

Let’s keep it simple

We can assume both the resistor to be as R1 and R2

So,in series combination

R1+R2=25 (i) let us take R2 = 25-R1

Now,in parallel combination

1/R1+1/R2 = 1/6

Rearranging it we get R1R2/(R1+R2) = 6(ii)

R1R2/25 = 6

So R1R2 = 150

R1(25-R1) = 150

25R1-(R1)²-150 = 0

(R1²)-25R1+150 = 0 (multiplying by -1 both sides)

By solving this quadratic equation we get two solutions that is 15 and 10

If we put R1 = 15 ohms then R2 will be 10 ohms

If we put R1 = 10 ohms then R2 will be 15 ohms.........
