The British had not expected that the issue of cartridges would become so complicated thought that it would soon die down. But Bahadur Shah Zafar's decision to bless the rebellions changed the entire situation dramatically. Often when people see an alternative possibility they feel inspired and enthused. It gives them to courage, hope and confidence to act. After the British were uprooted from Delhi, there was no uprising for almost a week. But after that a spurt of mutines began again. The people of the towns and villages rose up in rebellion and rallied around local leaders, zamindars and chiefs who were prepared to establish their authority and fight the British. The ruling families as also joined the rebel sepoys and fought the British with all their might.
