Answer :

Enthalpy and entropy change during adsorption :

  • Adsorption is am exothermic process i.e., ∆H is -ve and as molecules are held on the surface, entropy decreases, i.e., ∆S = -ve.
  • Adsorption is a spontaneous process, ∆G = -ve which is possible only if ∆H had sufficiently high -ve value. Hence, G, H and S all are -ve.

Additional Information :

  • Cause of adsorption : Unbalanced or residual attractive forces of the adsorbent are responsible for attracting the adsorbate particles on its surface.

The molecular species or substance, which concentrates or accumulates at the surface is termed as adsorbate and the material on the surface of which the adsorption takes place is called adsorbent.

  • The accumulation of molecular species at the surface rather than in the bulk of a solid or liquid is termed as adsorption.
