Certain elements exhibit more than one valency known as variable example.

Examples-

Fe2+ and Fe3+ I.e.iron exhibit two valency one +2 and the other +3 by losing 2 and 3 electrons respectively.

Hg+ and Hg2+ I.e. mercury exhibit two valency one +1 and the other +2 by losing 1 and 2 electrons respectively.
