Explanation:

Wilma was the founding director of two very highly successful, high performance centres, one being the Queensland Academy of Sport in Australia and the English Institute of Sport in the UK. Before overseeing the delivery of support to elite athletes, Wilma played on and coached the Australian Netball Team, winning three world championships and Wilma was the first professional coach of an elite netball team when she was appointed head coach at the Australian Institute of Sport in 1981. At 26, she was the youngest national coach ever appointed by the Australian Netball.

She is very passionate about enhancing the role of women in Australian sport in particular and is a founding member of Womensport Queensland which is a group dedicated to raising the profile of the state’s leading sportswomen.

In 1991, she received the Order of Merit from the Australian Institute of Sport and the next year, the Order of Australia for services to sport, particularly netball. In 2006, she was recognised as one of Australia’s 100 global Australians by Advance Australia. Wilma is currently on the board of the Queensland Academy of Sport and Netball Australia and a member of the High Performance Strategy Group that has worked with the Australian Sports Commission and the Australian Institute of Sport to deliver a national approach to achieving international sporting success
