The Chipko movement was started by Sunder Lal.

• Under Sunderlal Bahuguna, an eco activist, the Chipko Movement gained momentum. In April 1973, in Uttar Pradesh's Mandal village in the upper Alakananda valley, it typically began.  
• It rapidly spread to the state's other Himalayan districts. It was caused by the government decision to grant forest land to a sports corporation.
• Sunder lal invested his life gently persuading and informing the villagers to protest against the degradation of the lush forests and Himalayan mountains. It was his endeavour that saw then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi banning tress-cutting.
