  1. The soldiers felt that it was a move by the British to defame their religion because no Hindu would touch the beef and no Muslim would touch the pork. As a result, the Indian sepoys refused to use greased cartridges.
  2. After the Indian rebellion in 1857, the English prime minister came up with a bill to hand over the government to the crown, i.e. the Queen due to the defects found in the existing government. This led to the formation of the 1858 Act that gave the right to the Crown to run the government over the East India Company.

Answer:

1. Rumours of there being pork and beef components in the new grease cartridges spread among the sepoys. Although the British claimed that the rumours were false, the Indian sepoys thought that such a move was carried out to defame and disrespect their religions. The Hindus refused to use the cartridges as the cow is sacred to their religion, while pork was forbidden in Islam, so the Muslims refused to use the cartridges as well.

2. After the Indian War of Independence in 1857, there was thought to be defects in the existing British Government of India. According to British parliament, the East India Company was not good enough to control the administration of India. So in year 1958, the company came to an end, which led to the formation of the 1858 Act that gave the right to Queen Victoria to run the government over the East India Company.  This marked the beginning of the British Raj in India.
