It is to do with the way the Earth is tilted. In the summer time you are tilted towards the sun, this of course makes it hotter. In the winter you are tilted away from the sun, this of course makes it colder.
The closer to the equator you live the less there is a winter and summer because you stay much more tilted towards the sun at all times. This means it stays much more the same temperature the entire year round because you more or less stay at the same angle to the sun.
