The desert is about 650 miles long and 250-300 km wide. Its total area is about 1.75 lakh sq km. About two third of the Indian desert lies in Rajasthan, west of the Aravali Range, and the remaining one third is in the neighbouring states of Haryana, Punjab, and Gujarat.
The Central Highlands lies to the north of the Narmada river. It covers the major portion of the Malwa plateau. The rivers in this region flow from southwest to northeast; which indicates the slope of this region. It is wider in the west and narrower in the east. Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand mark the eastward extension of this plateau. The plateau further extends eastwards into the Chhotanagpur plateau.
India has two groups of islands. The Lakshadweep Islands lie in the Arabian Sea, to the southwest of the mainland. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie in the Bay of Bengal, to the southeast of the mainland. Lakshadweep is composed of small coral islands, covering a small area of 32 square kilometres.
