The expected side reaction of 2-menthyl-2butanol with strong acid with or without a nucleophile present is-

If we react the 2-menthyl-2butanol with strong acid without the nucleophile presence the. it will leads to the formation. of alkene ,while in presence of nucleophile , nucleophile will attack on the carbocation that is formed during the reaction as the intermediate.

Firstly ,strong acid like H2SO4 proton H+ attack on OH and make H2O+ , so then it will remove and make a carbocation . If nucleophile present the. it will attack on it ,if not then alkene will be formed.

OH H2O+

CH3-C-CH2-CH3 + H2SO4/H→CH3-C-CH2-CH3

| |

CH3 CH3

↓-H2O

+ CH2=CH-CH2-CH3 ← CH3-CH-CH2-CH3 (if nucleophile not present)

↓OH-

OH

|

CH3-CH-CH2-CH3

(if nucleophile present)
