mitochondria (singular- mitochondrion):
these are small rod like structures in cells. they provide energy for all the activities. this energy is produced by the oxidation of food (respiration). thus, they are often called "power house of the cell".
plastids : these are present only in plant cells. plastid contain certain pigments that have a specific role to play in the functioning of plants. these are of following three types:
(a) CHLOROPLAST are green plastids. they contain chlorophyll (green pigment) which help in photosynthesis.
(b) CHROMOPLASTS contain non-green pigments that give colour to flowers and fruits.
(c) LEUCOPLASTS are colourless plastids which help in storage of food.
