Let 6 years ago,

  Age of son = x years

  Age of father = 5 times of x years

                         = 5x years

Now, present : -

    Age of son = Age 6 years ago + 6 years

                        = x years + 6 years

                        = ( x + 6 ) years

 Age of father = Age 6 years ago + 6 years

                        = 5x years + 6 years

                        = ( 5x + 6 ) years

           According to the question : -

Present age of father = 3 times the age of son

( 5x + 6 ) years = 3( x + 6 ) years

( 5x + 6 ) = 3( x + 6 )

5x + 6 = 3( x ) + 3( 6 )

5x + 6 = 3x + 18

5x - 3x = 18 - 6

2x = 12

x = $\dfrac{12}{2}$

x = 6

Therefore,

Present age of son = ( x + 6 ) years

                                 = ( 6 + 6 ) years

                                 = 12 years

Present age of son is 12 years.
