Solution:

Let the present age of Rama be = x

Age of Rama before 6 years = x - 6

Age of mother, 6 years before: 3 (x-6)

Age of Rama after 6 years = x + 6

Age of mother, 6 years later = 2 (x+6)

What doesn't change is the difference between mother's and Rama's age.

3 (x-6) - (x-6) = 2 (x+6) - (x+6)

=> 3x - 18 - x + 6 = 2x + 12 - x - 6

=> x = 6 + 12

=> x = 18 years
