In an addition reaction, hydrogen gas is added to unsaturated hydrocarbons in presence of a nickle catalyst to make them saturated.

This is called hydrogenation reaction.

Its industrial use is that it is used to convert vegetable oil, which is unsaturated and not harmful for health to vanaspati ghee or butter, which are saturated fats, harmful for health. This is known as hydrogenation of oils.

The unsaturated oils are in liquid form but the saturated ones are solids.
