Given :

Prize given to winner = 750 rs .

Prize given to the people who didn't win = 125 rs .

Total amount distributed = 17,500 rs .

Total number of participants = 60 .

To find :

The winners and non - winners of the contest .

Solution :

Let the number of winners = x

• Total number of participants = Number of winners + Number of participants who didn't win .

60 = x + No. of participants who didn't win .

60 - x = No. of participants who didn't win .

• Total amount given to winners = Number of winners × Amount given to 1 winner .

⟹ x × 750 .

⟹ 750x .

• Total amount given to the participants who didn't win = Number of participants who didn't win × Amount given to 1 participant .

⟹ ( 60 - x )125 .

⟹ 7500 - 125x .

• Total prize money = Total amount given to winners + Total amount given to the participants who didn't win .

17,500 = 750x + 7500 - 125x

625x = 10,000

x = 16.

So, the no. of winners = 16 .

No. of participants who didn't win ,

= 60 - 16 = 44 .
