The train will reach the station 126 km away at 3:15 PM. (option 3)

Given,

A train starts at 1:30 P.M. from platform A,

Speed of the train = 72 km/h.

To find,

The time, when it will reach a station 126 km away.

Solution,

The relation among speed (v), distance (s), and time (t) is given as,

v=\frac{s}{t}     ...(1)

Here, the distance to be covered is, s = 126 km, and

the speed of the train, v = 72 km/h.

We can find the time taken by the train, using (1) as follows.

72=\frac{126}{t}

Rearranging,

t=\frac{126}{72}

t = 1.75 h.

This can also be written as,

t = (1 + 0.75) h = 1 h + 0.75 h

Now, as 1 h = 60 min

⇒ 0.75 h = 0.75×60 = 45 minutes.

So, the train takes 1 h 45 minutes to travel 126 km.

As the train started at 1:30 PM, thus,

the time at which it reaches the station 126 km away will be,

1:30 PM + 1 h 45 min

= (1 PM + 1 h) + [(30 + 45) min]

= 2 PM + 75 min

It can be seen from above, that on adding, we are getting time as,

2 PM and 75 minutes.

Now, as 60 min = 1 h

75 min = 60 min + 15 min = 1 h 15 min, so we have to add 1 h more, again to the hours.

Thus, the time will be

(2 PM + 1 h) and (15 min)

= 3:15 PM

the time at which it reaches the station 126 km away = 3:15 PM.

Therefore, the train will reach the station 126 km away at 3:15 PM. (option 3)
