7. 2x + 5y = 20 is a linear equation in the form ax + by = c.
a) Rearrange this equation into the form y = mx + c.
b) Sketch this straight line.
c) On the same grid, sketch the graph of x – 2y = 9.
d) Hence or otherwise, solve the following two equations simultaneously:
2x + 5y = 20

Answer:

( a) 2x + 5y = 20

5y = - 2x + 20

y = -2x/5 + 4

( d)

2x + 5y = 20

x – 2y = 9 ( multiply the linear equation by 2)

__________

2x + 5y = 20

2x - 4y = 18 subtract

______________

9y = 2

y = 2/9

x – 2y = 9

x = 9 + 2y

= 9 + 2 * 2 / 9

= 85/9

therefore x = 85/9 and y = 2/9 (answer )
