Let the number be x.

According to condition,

x+(20% of x) = 72

or, x+(20/100×x) = 72

or, x+20x/100 = 72

or, (100x+20x)/100 = 72

or, 120x/100 = 72

or, 120x =  72×100

or,  120x = 7200

or, x = 7200/120

or, x = 60

So, the number is 60.

The number when decreased by 10%

= 60-(10% of 60)

=  60-(10/100×60)

= 60-6

= 54

Hence, it will become 54 if it is decreased by 10%.
