all elements above hydrogen in the activity series react with acids to produce hydrogen gas. this happens because the elements above hydrogen are able to replace the hydrogen atom present in the acid.

EXPERIMENTAL SETUP

A round bottom flask with zinc is taken and a thistle funnel is out inside it through a holed cork. the thistle funnel contains dilute sulphuric acid. a delivery tube is attached to the round bottom flask and water on the other side.

PROCEDURE

Zinc reacts with sulphuric acid to give hydrogen gas and zinc sulphate

Zn + H2SO4 -> ZnSO4 +H2

hydrogen gas is then collected over water

PRECAUTIONS

the thistle funnel should be dipped in the acid in the round bottom flask orelse the hydrogen gas may escape.
