There are several different mechanisms by which fungi release their spores into the air, which then allows them to be dispersed by wind. ... Once free of the gills, they can be carried great distances by wind, away from the parent mycelium.

The spores of some fungi are dispersed in water or on the surface of water. The chemical composition of the wall of these spores makes them "non-wettable" so they won't sink. The spores are carried along on the surface of the water like little boats.

Spores are usually haploid and unicellular and are produced by meiosis in the sporophyte. Once conditions are favorable, the spore can develop into a new organism using mitotic division, producing a multicellular gametophyte, which will eventually go on to produce gametes. Two gametes fuse to create a new sporophyte.

Initially there are basidia in each of those grains (or peridioles). When the spores are mature, the basidia and peridiole walls disappear, leaving a powdery mass of spores. The peridioles at the top mature first, then the next layer down and so on through the fruiting body..
