Friction is a necessary evil. if it can wasteful at times , it can also be very necessary in some cases. Some situations/ways in which friction is needed to be increased are:

1. it is helpful in applying break in car, otherwise an accident would have taken place.
2. Hikers and trekkers, most of all, need footwear with these kinda soles. Imagine climbing a mountain, only to die when your sole have away halfway through. Or drowning in a river, because your boots couldn't grip the slimy Rick's effectively.
