Saprophytes digest their food externally. They do this by releasing extracellular enzymes which digest the dead organism and then they absorb the digested products. Saprophytes usually grow on the decaying tissue in order to ensure digested nutrients do not need to diffuse long distances to get to the saprophytic organism.

Saprophytes break down the food material outside the body and then absorb it. Examples are fungi like bread moulds, yeast and mushrooms.
