ANSWER:

Given:

  • If 45 is subtracted from twice the greater of two numbers, it results in the other number.
  • If 21 is subtracted from twice the smaller number, it results in the greater number.

To Find:

  • The numbers

Solution:

Let the numbers be x and y respectively.

Here, x is the greater number.

We are given that, if 45 is subtracted from twice the greater of two numbers, it results in the other number.

This means,

⇒2x - 45 = y -------(1)

And,

We are given that, if 21 is subtracted from twice the smaller number, it results in the greater number.

This means,

⇒2y - 21 = x --------(2)

Substituting value of y from (1) in (2),

⇒2(2x - 45) - 21 = x

⇒4x - 90 - 21 = x

Transposing x to LHS, and constants to RHS,

⇒4x - x = 90 + 21

⇒3x = 111

⇒x = 111/3

⇒x = 37.

Substituting value of x in (1),

⇒2(37) - 45 = y

⇒74 - 45 = y

⇒y = 29.

Hence, the numbers are 37 and 29 respectively.
