= (a+b)^2 = a^2 + b^2 + 2ab
adding - 3ab both sides
= (a + b )^2 - 3ab = a^2 + b^2 - ab
= 7^2 - 3*12 = a^2 + b^2 - ab
= 49 - 36 = a^2 + b^2 -ab
= 13 = a^2 + b^2 - ab
