the inference obtained is that the plant requires continuous input of water in a gradual manner. when the seed is immersed in water, it observes adequate water for next few minutes or so and therefore when exposed to air, it grows into a plant. but when it isn't sown in soil, it doesn't receive water for further growth and therefore it dies
