Rumtek Monastery – Located at the distance of 24 km from Gangtok, the Rumtek monastery is the largest monastery in Sikkim. It was built in 1740 originally by 9th Karmapa WangchukDorje but later reconstructed in 1959. It is the home of monks. There are several sacred objects in the monastery. The Golden Stupa is one of the most amazing objects and it contains the relics of the Sixteenth Karmapa
Enchey Monastery – This monastery is 200 years old and has retained its original structure till date.
The Enchey monastery is one of the most important monasteries of Sikkim and is situated in a dense wood. This old Buddhist monastery was built during the reign of ThutobNamgyal. The monastery belongs to the Nyingmapa order and about 200 years old.
The Namchi Monastery, Ralong Monastery and Tendong Hill are important Buddhist pilgrimage centres. The world's largest statue (at 118 feet) of the Buddhist Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche, the patron saint of Sikkim, is on the Samdruptse hill (The Wish Fulfilling well) opposite Namchi and is a must visit
Pemayangtse Monastery was built for “pure monks” (ta-tshang) meaning “monks of pure Tibetan lineage”, celibate and without any physical abnormality. This practice is still retained. Only the monks of Pemayangtse Monastery are entitled to the title “ta-tshang”.
