1/5 of x =1/3 of y

and x+y =16

x =16- y

so putting the above value of x

1/5×16 - y =1/3 ×y

16-y/5 = y/3

by cross multiplication method

3(16-y)= 5y

48-3y =5y

48 =5y + 3y

48 = 8y

y = 6

so x = 16 - y

putting value of y in this

x = 16-6

x =10
