According to the question,

$\frac{ - 5}{16} + \frac{17}{32} + ( \frac{ - 11}{48} ) + ( - 2) \\ = \frac{ - 5}{16} + \frac{17}{32} - \frac{11}{48} - \frac{2}{1}$

By taking the LCM of the denominators we get 48 and we'll use it for making the denominators the same

$\frac{ - 5 \times \: 3 }{16 \times 3} + \frac{17 \times 2}{32 \times 2} - \frac{11 \times 1}{48 \times 1} - \frac{2 \times 48}{1 \times 48} \\ = - \frac{15}{48} + \frac{34}{48} - \frac{11}{48} - \frac{96}{48} \\ = \frac{ - 15 + 34 - 11 - 96}{48} \\ = \frac{19 - 107}{48} \\ = \frac{ - 88}{48} \\ = - 1 \frac{40}{48} \\ = - 1 \frac{5}{6}$
