7. Student A, takes the temperature reading of Student B and holds the
thermometer horizontally while moving it to correctly note the temperature.
Student B argues that the reading is inaccurate since Student A took too much
time to read it and moved the thermometer a lot. Student A insists that the
reading is accurate. What makes Student A so sure about the temperature
reading?
(a) Laboratory thermometers are always held horizontally to prevent fluctuations,
(b) Clinical thermometers are held horizontally to prevent fluctuations.

Student A so sure about the temperature reading because (d) Readings on a clinical thermometer remain unchanged.

To know the correct answer, we need to know about the thermometer used by Student A to measure the temperature of Student B.

What is a clinical thermometer?

  • As it is already said that the temperature of student B is read by this thermometer, the thermometer is definitely a clinical thermometer and not a laboratory thermometer.
  • The clinical thermometer can measure the temperature readings from 35 °C to 42 °C. The body temperature lies in this range only.

How to use Clinical Thermometer?

  • To use a thermometer, Student A needs to give few je rks to bring the mercury level down. Also, he needs to sterilise it before use.
  • Then after it is placed below the tongue or under the arms of Student B so that the mercury rises due to the heat of the body.
  • The mercury rises up in the glass tube through the thin capillary, it cannot flow down as there is a kink present in the capillary.
  • To move the mercury level down, a few je rks are required.

Hence, Student A insists that the reading is accurate.

Note- Student B will be right if this was the case with a laboratory thermometer.
