Given :  Two unbiased dice are rolled.

To Find :   probability of getting sum of the upper faces

a) greater than 9

b) less than 5

Solution:

there are 6 possible outcomes of 1 dice

Hence 6 * 6 = 36 possible outcomes when two dice are rolled

Sum greater than 9  can be 10 , 11 or 12

{4 , 6} , {5, 5 } , { 6 , 4} , { 5 , 6} , { 6 , 5} , { 6 , 6}

There are 6  favorable outcomes

Hence P ( sum greater than 9)  = 6/36 = 1/6

Sum less than 5  can be 2 , 3 , 4

{ 1 , 1} , {1 , 2} , {2 , 1} , { 1, 3 } , { 2 , 2} , { 3 , 1}

There are 6  favorable outcomes

Hence P (Sum less than 5)  = 6/36 = 1/6
