When we do heavy exercises, our body cells require more energy. In order to release energy from nutrients, they need to combine them with oxygen.

At this pace, need of oxygen increases. But when muscle cells receive insufficient oxygen, they start respiring energy in presence of incomplete oxygen. Due to this incomplete supply of oxygen, muscle cells repire anaerobic ally due to which we get muscle cramps.
