We can simply solve the above problem as follows;

We know that,

A number will be divisible by 9 If the sum of digits of the number is divisible by 9.

Given,

72a384 is divisible by 9

This means that the sum of digits is also divisible by 9

Sum of the digits = 7+2+a+3+8+4 = 24+a

Therefore,

24+a is also divisible by 9

We know that the number nearest to 24 is 27 which is divisible by 9

So,

24 + a = 27

a = 27-24 = 3

Hence, The value of a is 3
