let the compound be MClx
MClx⇒ M^{+x}  Cl^{-1}
chlorine can take up only one electron
therefore its valency is 1
but in the compound only 35.5g of Cl is there i.e. one mole of Cl(x=1)
and mass of M is =74.5-35.5=39
39 is molecular mass of K
so M is K
