Given info : Frequency of photons emitted in Paschen's series is given by, v = 3.29 × 10¹⁵ Hz[1/3² - 1/n²].

To find : The value of n if transition is observedat 1285 nm, is ..

solution : frequency, v = c/λ

here c = speed of light = 3 × 10^8 m/s

and λ = wavelength = 1.285 nm = 1.285 × 10^-9 m

so, v = (3 × 10^8)/(1285 × 10^-9)

= 2.335 × 10¹⁴ Hz

⇒2.335 × 10¹⁴ = 3.29 × 10¹⁵[1/3² - 1/n²]

⇒2.335/32.9 = [1/3² - 1/n²]

⇒0.071 = 1/9 - 1/n²

⇒0.071 - 0.11 = -1/n²

⇒0.04 = 1/n²

⇒1/25 = 1/5² = 1/n²

⇒n = 5

Therefore the value of n is 5.
