x+y=40.........(i)

7x+3y=180............(ii)

to solve both the equations , multiply (i) with 3.

then we will get it as 3x+3y=120

we should change signs for the new equation we got i.e... -3x-3y=-120

now we can find x and y easily......

-3x-3y=-120

7x+3y=180

4x. =60

therefore,, x=60/4=15

now substitute value of x in the eq(ii)..

7(15)+3y=180i

105+3y=180

3y=180-105=75

y=75/3=25.

we got it,.... answer is (x,y)=(15,25)
