°°° Solution °°°

• Let W denotes the whole piece of work given. It is mentioned that A, B & C, alone can complete the work W in respectively 9, 12 & 18 days. So we find that in 1 day A, B & C, alone can complete the amounts of work respectively W/9, W/12 & W/18.

• It is mentioned that they all started the work together, but A left after 3 days. Let N denotes the number of days required by B & C to complete the remaining work. So we get the following equation,

3*(W/9 + W/12 + W/18) + N*(W/12 + W/18) = W

or (1/3 + 1/4 + 1/6) + N*(1/12 + 1/18) = 1 or 3/4 + N*(5/36) = 1

or N*(5/36) = 1 - 3/4 = 1/4 or N = (36/5)*(1/4) = 9/5

= 1.8 (days)
