Solutions :

Question 1

Let us assume that the original price of the book is Rs. X

Now, it is sold at a 20% reduction in cost .

Thus , new price becomes :

=> ( 100 - 20 )/( 100) of X

=> 80/100 x

But , this is Rs. 120

So,

80/100 x = 120

=> 80 x = 120 × 100

=> 80x = 12000

=> x = 150

Thus , the original price of the book is Rs. 150 .

Option D is the correct answer .

Question 2 :

An election candidate who got 40% of the total votes was defeated by x votes .

Find the total number of votes .

Let us assume that the total number of votes is v .

So , the candidate who got 40% of the total number of votes gets 40% of v

The other candidate who won gets 60% of v

The difference in the number of votes among them is x .

=> 60% of v - 40% of v = x

=> 20/100 v = x

=> ⅕ v = x

=> v = 5x

This is the required answer .
